Exhibited 1998 at the Kulturforum Alte Post, Neuss
Project details
Acoustic Environment with 12 Cassette players and 12 endless tape loops designed for the Ballhaus in Düsseldorf.
Each in their own, different native language - of which six male and six female artists - answer the question “What is Art?”. The statements were processed not according to their content but according to rhythmic and melodic criteria in each of the different languages. So the speakers would not understand their own words any more in the end. The underlining question this work poses is whether art, as a means of communication in each of various cultures, is part of an universal expression of humankind. The collages from the recorders are played simultaneously. Result is a monotonous whispering in space which I picture to be either the Miracle of Pentecost or the Babylonian confusion of tongues.
