From 14 July to 9 September 2006, 15 artists from Düsseldorf exhibited and held events
at the former caretaker’s house by the water playground in Düsseldorf’s Zoopark
Project details
The title of the exhibition project is a dada-like allusion to the two playgrounds adjoining the caretaker’s house – where usually fathers are called by their children (‘daddy’ is ‘papa’). Simulated occupation of the idyllic pavilion was planned, a colourful paddling pool for children, graffiti for seniors to do, an absurd costume performance, the creation of instant computer generated pictures, performances of word games as well as the exhibition of objects, drawings, photo collages and installations specially created for the building and its surroundings.
The aim of the ‘Zoopapapa’ project was to use a normally unnoticed pavilion as the starting point for funny, surprising, artistic activities and to make it once again the focus of its surrounding environment. The small building, with its current minimal use as a shelter and meeting point, served as a trigger for artistic ideas and activities. The ‘Zoopapapa’ project was to be understood as an attempt to develop new ideas for a utopian utiliza-tion of the old building through temporarily created artistic sketches. The artistic project ‘Zoopapapa’ was to be understood as a catalyst for making a social contribution to urban development and was run in the tradition of an enhanced concept of art, bringing in its wake a greater prominence for socially committed ‘democratic art’. With this in mind the project involved artists who had shown that they could and would make references in their artistic work to existing architectural, historical and social contexts.
